Spatio-temporal dynamics of slow wave activities measured by transcranial flavin autofluorescence imaging in the mouse neocortex

Abstract(in English) During slow wave sleep, which is the resting sleep stage, slow wave activity (SWA) is observed in the neocortex of the brain. Previous studies have proved that SWA propagates and spreads over the cortex. However, detailed dynamical properties including initiation, propagation and cessation of the SWA have not fully elucidated. In this study, we investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of SWA during slow wave sleep-like stages in the urethane-anesthetized mice by the transcranial flavoprotein fluorescence imaging (FFI) technique. It is shown that the SWA is classified into locally isolated type and wide-spreading type based on the spreading size of SWA in the cortex. In addition, it is found that the propagation speed of the wide-spreading SWA changed discontinuously during traveling on the cortex. These results would explain the existence of distinct mechanisms that underlies initiation and development of SWA in the brain.
