Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In Standard English, can functions as a modal auxiliary. However, it has also been documented to have other functions in Colloquial Singapore English (CSE): as a pseudo-tag marker, a sentence-final particle, an adjective, a discourse marker or a single-word response (Hiramoto 2012). In this presentation, I document a new use of can, known as the okay can construction. Interestingly, this construction appears to have first been coined on Twitter, before being grammaticalised into mainstream CSE. Survey data also indicates that this construction entered CSE post-2011, and is still stabilising. As such, I suggest that new linguistic constructions could arise from areas not typically studied in electronic media, such as the use of hashtags.
