Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | A silicon photonic 32X32 strictly non-blocking matrix switch utilizing Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometers controlled by the thermo-optic effect has 2048 heater elements. In order to perform a desired connection of the optical input ports and the output ports, it is necessary to individually control the applied power to the heaters. To achieve this, we employed a pulse-width modulation to control the average power of the heaters. The pulse-width modulation is performed with high-repetition rate ON-OFF signal instead of a control of the applied analog current value to each heater. For achieving a high timing-resolution, two frequency counters are used with Vernier effect from the slightly shifted clocks in a frequency. We verified the timing-resolution of 6480 steps with 1 us repetition rate for each heater. Five general-purpose FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) to control the heaters, buffer ICs and the switch element are mounted on a printed circuit board of 220 mm X 235 mm. The total switch system including the redundancy power-supply units, the cooling fans and control USB interface are installed to the 19 inches-wide 1RU-height housing. |
