Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) An Yes/No communication aid for totally locked-in ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) patients has been studied. To mark the first step of its application the aid was utilized to get the vowels of a word that a subject wants to communicate with caregivers. An experiment was attempted to get the vowels “iu” of a word “inu (dog)” from Oriental Zodiac by two subjects; one is healthy and the other ALS patient. As a result the patient selected vowels correctly once and the other fourth out of 12 trials including trials of left and right forehead. It takes more time to put the aid into the real situation of hearing vowels of a word by the aid but this result seemed to show the possibility of its future success.
