Influence of Accommodation on Human Vision's Perceptual Characteristics at Switching Images

Abstract(in English) Many studies have shown that accommodation error changes adaptively depending on presented image’s properties even if the viewing distance is kept constant. However, they have not necessarily clarified how accommodation error influences image perception and recognition in human vision. This research clarifies the relation between accommodation error and image perception and recognition in human vision. Actually, it switches instantaneously on the CRT monitor from the first image to the second image and examines the relation between the second image’s presentation time and the recognition rate for the second image. Consequently, the following results are obtained: (1) there exists the minimum time (recognition time) to perceive and recognize the second image; (2) recognition time changes depending on the difference in property between the two images; (3) as for the two images inducing the same amount of accommodation error, the recognition time when the recognition rate for the second image reaches 90 % is 50~80 ms; (4) as for the two images inducing the different amounts of accommodation error, the recognition time for the second image is more than 150 ms. These results suggest that accommodation error can influence image perception and recognition in human vision.
