Optical Amplification Methods for Large Scale Phtonic Integration

Abstract(in English) For large scale photonic integration, where a large number of photonic devices are integrated on a chip, to which a large number of input/output fibers are connected, optical amplification is necessary to compensate losses caused by photonic devices. While it is proposed to integrate SOAs for the amplification, it is better, w.r.t. power consumption, to have external EDFAs connected to the chip using part of input/output fibers. Further, if components of the EDFAs excluding EDFs or EDFs and LDs for pump light are photonically integrated on the chip, overall volume becomes smaller.
