A study on residual ranging error for GPS positioning

Abstract(in English) The Global Positioning Systems (GPS) is used to estimate the position of a rover station in many applications which use the location information. A residual ranging error of the signal from the GPS satellite is thought to be due to the ionospheric layer delay and depends on the elevation angle of the satellite. The conventional positioning algorithms have focused on a relationship between the the variance of the residual ranging error and the elevation angle. It is possible to improve the positioning accuracy by considering the variance. However, there has been no study that tried to consider the average bias. In this paper, we assume that the residual ranging error is characterized by the Gaussian random process and propose a new positioning algorithm by involving the average and the variance. We demonstrate a stochastic properties of the residual ranging error and evaluate the proposed positioning algorithm which considers the properties by using the practical measurement at the GPS-based control station.
