Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In present study, we tried to reveal the mechanism of human social cognition, investigating how simple visual features such as an geometric figure’s orientation influence on our perception of “humanness”. Participants worked on a task to control some isosceles triangles so as not to hit an object (a red disc) moving automatically although the triangles moved in random direction corresponding to participants’ operation. Then, they observed an identical task performed automatically and are asked to judge whether human (other participant) or a computer made the triangles’ movement. In these tasks, a green disc which move side by side with a red one or followed by it was presented. The direction triangles pointed to was one of discs or random position. Results showed the orientation of triangles had variable influence on agency judgment depending on the kind of pointed object and the spatial relationship between two discs. Because these effects were modulated by individual differences in empathy measured with a questionnaire, it’s suggested that a simple feature of figure could influence the perceived animacy by promoting higher order social cognition involving contexts even in the situation these couldn’t be valid cues in facts.
