Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In this paper, we analyze the relation between community structure of a social network among social media users and information diffusion on the network. We particularly focus on a popular social media platform, Twitter for our analyses. Through empirical analyses using large-scale dataset, we show that most tweets spread locally within a single community. More specifically, we show that the frequency of retweets between users who are in the same community is approximately two times higher than that between users who are in different communities, and that only approximately 20% retweets are made by users whose communities are different from users who post the original tweets. In contrast, we also show that the expected number of retweets of a tweet spreading among different communities is significantly higher than that of a tweet spreading within a single community. Our results suggest that while there exists strong locality in tweet diffusion on Twitter, some tweets spreading among different communities will go viral.
