Analysis of local magnetic field obtained by probe-sample distance modulation in STM-SQUID microscope

Abstract(in English) We have developed an STM-SQUID microscope, in which a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is combined with a high-Tc rf-SQUID. The probe having high permeability plays important roles of the STM probe and the flux guide so that magnetic and topographic images can be obtained simultaneously. The probe makes the magnetic flux transferred from the sample to the SQUID via not only the probe tip near the sample surface, but also the position far from the sample. Therefore, the magnetic image taken by the normal method is significantly influenced by the magnetic field distribution above the sample. In this study, distance-modulation was carried out for extraction of the local magnetic field of the sample surface. Then, we analyzed the magnetic images obtained by the distance modulation from the simulation and experiment. It showed that the distance-modulated magnetic image could be very similar to the actual distribution of the sample surface due to cancellation of the background magnetic field and reduction of the SQUID noise.
