Statistical analysis of transient noise observed at Hashirimizu Port in Yokosuka

Abstract(in English) In coastal water, ambient noise is dominated by snapping shrimp, and it is necessary to know its characteristics to design and operate of sonar. First, we analyzed amplitude statistics of ambient noise observed in Hashirimizu Port. The result shows that the amplitude histogram has a non-Gaussian distribution, and it can be approximated by Symmetric-α-stable (SαS) distribution. If snapping sounds occurred by following a homogeneous Poisson process, the inter-snap interval follows the exponential distribution. Second, we compared the inter-snap interval histogram (IIH) with the exponential distribution. And it is showed that the observed snapping sounds follow a homogeneous Poisson process.
