Abstract(in English) In mode division multiplexing transmission using few-mode fibers (FMFs), the losses and mode crosstalk that occur at splices are key issues, since they degrade the transmission performance. Therefore, it is essential when designing a system to be able to estimate the splice losses and mode crosstalk at a splice, i.e. coupling efficiencies at a splice, analytically before installing FMFs in the field. In this paper, we propose an effective mode field diameter (MFD) for the second-order (LP11) mode to estimate the coupling efficiencies in two-mode fibers (TMFs). Simulations are performed to verify the estimation validity. In addition, we propose a novel technique based on optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) to measure the effective MFD distribution along TMFs. Its feasibility is demonstrated experimentally.
