Two-dimensional Optical Strain Sensing based on Butt-Coupling between Single-Mode Fiber and Two-Mode Fiber

Abstract(in English) This report describes an optical strain sensor that utilizes a butt-joint coupling between single-mode fiber (SMF) and two-mode fiber (TMF). A series of detailed experiment for the butting angle, we can confirm that 2-dimensional strain measurement is possible through LP11-mode patterns from the TMF output. At the same time, interference between LP01 and LP11 mode excited in the TMF core, helped us to measure the angle with an accuracy of 0.25 degrees. This also reports that a result from a dynamic strain measurement with using an offset coupling between SMF and TMF. An experimental waveform obtained by a light impact with a tennis ball dropping from about 20 cm height was obtained. As a reference, a simultaneous waveform obtained with an electrical sheet-type sensor ?is also shown and compared.
