Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study examined whether unconscious L2-to-L1 translation is involved in word recognition by Chinese-Japanese bilinguals, whose languages share grapheme-meaning conversion system. They may retrieve L1-word form when they access L2 word meaning as Chinese-English bilinguals (Thierry & Wu, 2007), or may not if they rely on L1-inherited knowledge of graphemes. Both bilingual and native Japanese speakers showed decreased N400, a semantic priming during reading pairs of Japanese words. However, only bilinguals were sensitive to the prime word whose hidden Chinese translation had one character overlapped with the target, reflected by a larger P200. The result suggests that the implicit activation of L1 word form is interfering L2 word recognition.
