Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Psycholinguists have observed that predicates describing a single event are more costly to process when combined with durative adverbs than with punctual adverbs, which has been interpreted as evidence for iterative coercion. In order to investigate the reality of punctual coercion (an inverse operation from durative to punctual interpretations), as well as whether aspectual coercion should be seen as a category-changing operation based on the dichotomous durative/punctual distinction or a degree-changing operation based on graded preferences for durative or punctual interpretations, an eye-tracking experiment was conducted. The results suggest that (i) punctual coercion is real and hence aspectual coercion is bi-directional, and (ii) coercion is a graded operation.
