Abstract(in English) | In Super-Nyquist wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical fiber transmission systems with channel spacing of smaller than a signal baudrate, duobinary shaping with bandwidth of half a signal baudrate is usually introduced to suppress linear crosstalk from adjacent WDM channels. Although it gives rise to remarkable inter-symbol interference (ISI), ISI can be compensated for by the use of a maximum likelihood (ML) decoder in a receiver. Note that errors tend to propagate after the ML decoder for duobinary shaping. Such continuous errors remarkably degrade the performance of forward error correction (FEC) after the ML decoder. In order to improve the performance of FEC in Super-Nyquist WDM systems, we propose application of turbo equalization to the receiver. The turbo equalizer is based on a feedback configuration between the first ML decoder for duobinary shaping and the second FEC decoder. By iterative process through the feedback configuration, the error propagation can be suppressed. We evaluate experimentally and numerically the performance of turbo equalization for Super-Nyquist WDM signals encoded by turbo code with 20% overhead. Without any FEC, we found 1-dB penalty due to continuous excess errors caused by ML decoder for duobinary shaping in the pre-FEC BER performance of Super-Nyquist WDM signals, compared with Nyquist WDM signals. Using turbo equalization compensating for such continuous errors, the penalty in the BER performance can be improved to be 0.5 dB. As results, pre-FEC BER threshold for achieving post-FEC BER of smaller than 10-5 can be improved in the Super-Nyquist WDM case. |
