Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Rapid changes in cross-polarization discrimination (XPD) of Ka-band satellite radio wave caused by thunder- storm events are presented using the beacon signal (19.45GHz, right-hand circular polarization) of CS-3 and N-Star observed at 1 sec interval in Osaka Electro-Communication University, Neyagawa, Osaka, from 1990 to 2006. Their yearly statistics and yearly variations are discussed using the co-polar and cross-polar signals received for the past 17 years of these observation periods. Some rapid changes are found to actually coincide with the cloud-to-ground lightning strokes which occurred on the south side of our earth station at the distance of about 10 km. At the moment of the rapid changes, Most of the observed data indicate decrease in XPD. Also, they show the tendencies that cross-polar phases approaches -90 deg after the rapid changes, indicating that canting angles of ice crystals possibly causing the depolarization changes quickly decrease toward the horizontal direction. The number of thunderstorm events and rapid changes in XPD shows large yearly variations in a time scale of about five years. These long-term yearly variations may be related to periodic cycles of summertime convective activities in Japan, probably caused by larger-scale climate change in the equatorial region.
