Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In recent years, there has been a growing interest in stimulating in the brain tissue non-invasively and locally in the medical treatment/diagnosis. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is the one of the non-invasive method for brain stimulation. TMS induces a current in a specific area of teh brain by a magnetic field that a coil generated. This technique is used for the diagnosis of the brain to observe an elicited reaction during electrostimulation. However, the localization of the stimulus area is not easy to specifiy due to the current induced in non-intended target region, which is attributable to complex structure of brain anatomy. The purpose of this study is to compute the induced electric field in the brain and to localize the motor target area as post-processing. We developed a realistic human brain model, which has been developed from MR (magnetic resonance) images of a patient. Then, the brain stimulation is stimulated with the record of clinical data. The coil positions used in the computation were three, in which motor evoked potential (MEP) was observed. The computational results between stimulation samples show different electric field distributions due to subject-specific anatomical difference. In addition, the internal electric field strength in the actual target area (in this study M1), which is related to the observed MEP, should be large enough in all the stimulation samples. The estimated area obtained by the superimposing three samples suggested that the hand motor area can be estimated in higher resolution as compared to previous studies.
