Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) For severely paralyzed people, a brain-machine interface (BMI) or brain-computer interface provides a way of re-establishing communication and life independence. The authors developed an internet-based BMI system that enable the users to control user’s avatar in a virtual world (Second Life ®) by thinking body movements. We report that a patient with chronic muscular dystrophy succeed to demonstrate our experience with the feasibility of the BMI as a new communication tool. We also describe plastic changes in EEG pattern by long-term BMI training in the patient. Based on the results, we also recently investigate the possibility of treatment by BMI training for stroke and other neural diseases. In this presentation, we reviewed the recent progress of BMI technologies and showed our recently results.
