Visualization of ultrasound fields in transparent media with attenuation using image subtraction schlieren technique

Abstract(in English) To consider safety of medical ultrasound equipment, it is important to evaluate a pressure waveform inside the body. Currently, pressure waveforms in the body are estimated by correction of pressure waveforms measured in water considering ultrasound attenuation in biological tissues. However, it is difficult to correct frequency-dependent attenuation of wade band pulses propagating tissues with non-liner propagation effect. In this study, acoustic fields of an ultrasound pulse propagating a transparent medium with ultrasound attenuation were visualized using the image subtraction Schlieren technique. Pressure waveforms of the pulse were also measured using a membrane hydrophone and were compared with brightness change curves derived from the visualized field images and also with 1st-order integration of the brightness curves. The experimental results that used castor oil as the medium revealed that the integrated brightness curves are in better agreement with the pressure waveforms. Frequency spectrum analysis confirmed good agreement of attenuation coefficients derived from the pressure waveforms and the integrated brightness curves, suggesting the usefulness of the technique not only for visualization of ultrasound fields but also for evaluation of pressure waveforms and ultrasound attenuation.
