On the Range in Inter-Base Station Information Exchange in Online Probabilistic Activation Control of Base Stations Based on Observed System Throughput

Abstract(in English) In this paper, we investigate the influence of the range in inter-base station (BS) information exchange in our previously reported online probabilistic activation control of BSs. In the reported method, the network-level system throughput is shared by all BSs by using the inter-BS information exchange regarding the system throughput observed at each BS. Based on the obtained network-level system throughput, all pico-BSs control activation probability independently. This method is practical compared to the conventional approaches, since the proposed method does not rely on a priori knowledge of probability distributions of user locations or the traffic load in the entire system coverage. Nevertheless, excessively wide range in inter-BS information exchange about local system throughput increases the traffic in backhaul and control delay in the reported method. Furthermore, in the reported method, the update of activation probability of particular BS based on the system throughput observed far away from that BS, which is effectively not related to the activation/deactivation state of that BS, may result in undesirable control. By using the computer simulation, we show that there is appropriate range of inter-BS information exchange in our reported method. It is also shown that the appropriate range is not dependent on the node density of pico-BSs.
