[Invited Talk] Studies on Receive Diversity and MIMO receivers based on the antenna with periodically variable antenna pattern

Abstract(in English) In this talk, the author presents the studies conducted by the members of the author's laboratory on receive diversity and MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) reception by using the antenna whose antenna patterns can be periodically varied. The author believes that the antenna can significantly reduce the antenna size and solve the size problem in massive MIMO systems. The antenna consists of an active and parasitic elements, which are terminated by variable reactance element. Applying periodic voltage, whose period $T_{s}$ is $T_{s}=1/f_{s}$, to the parasitic elements, we can vary reactance value of the antenna. As a result, the antenna pattern can be biased periodic patterns. The time variable antenna pattern can make the spectrum of received signals divided into (typically) three, one is at the carrier frequency, the others are at the frequency shifted by $pm f_{s}$ from the carrier frequency. Recognizing the components as diversity branch in the frequency region, we can obtain diversity gain or achieve MIMO receiver by single RF (Radio Frequency) front-end.
