Abstract(in English) In this paper, we study on a design of an optical waveguide device with high refractive index contrast based on a gradient-based topology optimization using a semi-vectorial finite-difference beam propagation method (SVFD-BPM). We have reported a topology optimal design of an optical waveguide device using the BPM. However, our approach has not been employed to an optical waveguide device with high refractive index contrast. In this paper, we study on the topology optimal design of strongly guiding waveguide devices using a power-conserving SVFD-BPM which retain an effect of longitudinal field component. In addition, the density method is selected to represent refractive index distribution and the adjoint variable method is employed for the sensitivity analysis.
