Abstract(in English) | We previously reported that intraday physical activity patterns are related to the distinction between major depression and bipolar disorder, suggesting that one’s physical activity pattern can be used as an auxiliary index for mood disorder diagnosis. In the present study, we investigated the effect of the administration of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) on the intraday physical activity patterns over 4 weeks after the start of SSRI administration. Inpatients (N = 90) with major depression or bipolar disorder were divided into the following three groups: (1) Participants continuously administered with SSRIs, (2) Participants discontinued from SSRI administration during the 4-week period, and (3) Participants taking antidepressants other than SSRIs. The participants provided their 4-week activity log data as measured by accelerometers. Each 4-week data block was divided into 1-day-long sections. We performed a Fourier series expansion on the activity levels for each section and a principal component analysis (PCA) on the coefficients of the expansion. We examined the differences in the changes of PC scores between the groups using a state-space model. Our results indicated that the group to whom SSRIs were administered showed a significant increase in their activity level, especially in the mornings, compared with the other groups. |
