Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Twenty-eight subjects read Japanese text with the line length of 5-40 characters per line at their normal reading speed. We investigated the eye movements of the fast readers and the slow readers. The fast readers had shorter fixation durations and fewer fixations than the slow readers. Regardless of the line length, the difference in the mean fixation duration is constant. Meanwhile, the difference in the number of fixations is dependent on the line length. In the case of 5-11 characters per line, the higher frequency of reading with single fixation per line contributes to fewer fixations. In the case of 20-40 characters per line, the longer forward saccades contribute to fewer fixations.
