Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) “Contact situation” is the situation of speaking non-native language with the native speaker, in which we often experience “deviation” from the linguistic and/or the cultural norms. We explored how a Chinese woman (i.e., non-native speaker) would manage her own deviations in contact situation. We conducted a conversation experiment, in which a Chinese (n = 9) and a Japanese (n = 9) talked with each other for 15 minutes. As a result, the non-native speaker corrected the linguistic deviations spontaneously (e.g., grammar), whereas she did not do so for the communicative deviations (e.g., honorific manner). We also explore in-depth why the non-native speaker failed to correct her own deviations by multiple correspondence analysis. The non-native speaker tended to think that she has no way in correcting her own linguistic deviations, expressing pause (silence), vocal fillers, and motion fillers. In contrast, the non-native speaker thought that she has enough ability to correct the communicative deviations by herself, but let them go, perhaps because the non-native speaker’s correction of such the deviations can distract the construction of good friendship with the native speakers. These results suggest that balancing “communicating the intention” and “keeping good friendship” be cues to correct deviations in contact situation.
