[Fellow Memorial Lecture] Research and Development of Optical Fibers and Their International Standardization

Abstract(in English) 45 years have already passed since optical fiber with a loss of 20dB/km was achieved by Corning. Optical fibers have been used not only in the various fields and but also for the various purposes as well as the optical telecommunication systems. Since 1970, the optical fibers with a loss of 0.15 dB/km and the capacity of 100 Gb/s have been realized due to the improvement of the fabrication technologies and relevant technologies. At present, the innovative optical fiber technologies have been also researched and developed over the worldwide because it is considered that the current optical fibers have the transmission capacity limit and the traffic increases with a few ten % in a year. In this presentation, the research and development of the optical fiber technologies and their international standardization are described from 1980 to the present.
