A GPU-based Approach for Accelerating HEVC Compression of the Light-field Video

Abstract(in English) A light field camera is capable of refocusing the image and providing depth of the objects. A raw captured image contains massive micro-images that are post processed for such applications.With rich information, light field camera is suitable for the future 3D television broadcasting.Still, the video encoding, such as HEVC, is required to reduce the amount of data transmission.In this research, we analyzed the opportunity of using GPU device to accelerate the HEVC encoding.We modified and evaluated a quarter-precision pixel generation filtering, which is the most frequently called function of HEVC encoding.However, the result showed 5.04 times performance degradation from the baseline due to the data transactions between host and GPU. Thus, we recommend the GPU accelerating at a per-frame function level to obscure the data transaction overhead.
