Classification of MRI Images of Alzheimer's Disease without Extraction of Anatomical Region of Interest.

Abstract(in English) In this paper, we propose a method to classify Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment in MRI images. Previous methods used image features that are extracted from anatomical region of interest (anatomical ROI) to train a classifier. In the Alzheimer's disease, however, the accuracy in extracting anatomical ROIs decreases because it atrophies patients' brain. To address this problem, we extract image features from the concentric-spherical blocks obtained by dividing a MRI image at a regular interval. Using the extracted features, we train a classifier with an AdaBoost method. The use of the AdaBoost method allows us to automatically select image features that are discriminative in classifying Alzheimer's disease. Using the ADNI dataset, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
