Ball Detection Function for the Blind Bowling Support System using a Depth Sensor

Abstract(in English) A blind bowling support system is being developed with purpose to realize an alternative solution to supporting by a sighted assistant and a remaining pin counting function has been established using simple image processing. As a next step, a ball detection function in the area of arrow marks on the lane is developed and tested. The function is realized with a depth sensor which is connected with a pipe-frame bridged over the lane. The sensor detects a position of a throwing ball by finding a nearest point when the ball is going through under the sensor. The detected position is reported by a speech synthesizer through a wireless speaker to a blind player immediately. Testing the system includes the ball detection function showed that the method basically can detect the ball course correctly even though the software should be improved.
