Static Detection of ROP Chain Based on Hidden Markov Model

Abstract(in English) Threats of targeted attacks have been widely observed. The targeted attacks generally utilize malicious documents that cause malware infection by exploiting a viewer application. To take effective countermeasures against the attacks, detecting on networks as well as on endpoints is desirable. However, existing detection methods are mainly constructed with the dynamic analysis that requires certain execution time and poor for inspecting the whole files on the network. Therefore, quick detection of the malicious documents is a important challenge. In this paper, we propose a method of statically detecting ROP chains included in malicious documents. Our method produces Hidden Markov Model of ROP chain sequences and document sequences by learning known malicious documents. We show that the model can quickly detect the ROP chains included in unknown malicious documents.
