Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Damage caused by malware has been a significant problem that need to be addressed. In order to protect PC or smartphone devices from such threats, it is crucial to prevent malware infection before it happens. However, since there are no perfect solutions that satisfy such requirement, e.g., zero-day attacks and/or social engineering techniques, it is always the case that vulnerable devices are infected with new malware. Next thing we can do is to detect such infected hosts as soon as possible. In this work, we propose a novel, lightweight system that aims to identify devices that are likely infected with malware. The system analyses Internet backbone traffic and detect traffic attributed to malware communication. Our key idea is to make use of various information recorded in HTTP headers and apply a machine learning algorithm to classify observed HTTP headers into two classes: legitimate and malicious. Throughout experiments, we demonstrate our methodology can achieve up to 97.2% of accuracy in detecting malicious traffic. We also demonstrate that by adopting feature selection technique and sparse learning algorithm with L1 regularization, we can drastically reduce the number of features needed to train our classifier; hence the system can be lightweight. |
