Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The estimation of signal power and noise spectral density is a fundamental problem in communication theory, which is conventionally acquired from the received pilot signals. To increase the power- and bandwidth-efficiency, the pilot overhead has to be reduced and the remaining pilots are usually not sufficient for accurate acquisition of the signal power and noise spectral density. In this paper, we derive the soft-decision-aided joint maximum likelihood (SDA-ML) estimator for the signal power and the noise spectral density that utilizes entire received signal sequence including both pilot signals and data signals. Our work shows how the soft information should be utilized to estimate the signal power and the noise spectral density. An iterative implementation of the SDA-ML estimator is also proposed, which uses a previous estimate of the signal power and the noise spectral density to get the next estimate. Simulation results show that the SDA-ML estimator outperforms conventional pilot-aided estimation and hard-decision estimation in the normalized estimation error variance and bit error rate.
