Energy-Friendly Mobile Video Streaming using High Throughput Transfer and Buffering Strategy

Abstract(in English) Considering mobile throughput fluctuation and playout buffering strategy is important to provide comfortable and energy-friendly video streaming for mobile users. In this paper, we evaluate energy consumption of mobile devices under different wireless throughputs and playout buffer sizes. We then propose a green video technique using playout buffer strategy based on mobile throughput fluctuation. In our proposal, once a mobile user detects high throughput area on the route using throughput history data, the playout buffer size will be temporally increased, and the user will aggressively download video segments until fulfilling the extended buffer. After leaving the high throughput area, the mobile user will consume video segments from the extended buffer to keep smooth video playback without wireless communications. Finally, we evaluate the performance of our proposal using computer simulations and experiments in a real environment.. From these results, our proposal can achieve energy-friendly mobile video streaming.
