Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The avian brains have a well-developed centrifugal control system (the isthmo-optic system) of the contralateral retina. Various evidences revealed that the isthmo-optic signals sending to the retina enhance retinal outputs locally and transiently, functioning as spatial attention. In the present study, we reversibly blocked the isthmo-optic signals by pharmacological inactivation of the isthmo-optic neurons. We assembled three touch displays to present a target letter and distracters in a very wide visual field of quail, and trained quails to reach the target letter with a beak. Blocking of the isthmo-optic signals decreased selection accuracy of the targets that were presented in the visual field contralateral to the injection side (= affected side of inactivation), but increased that of the targets that were presented in the visual field ipsilateral to the injection side. Thus, the isthmo-optic systems of both sides may compete with each other for enhancement of the retinal output of a particular side.
