Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Speech contains paralinguistic information and lexical content. Previous studies have demonstrated that young children based on lexical content rather than paralinguistic information to infer speaker affect whereas adults rely more heavily on paralinguistic information. Children’s failure to consider paralinguistic information may be attributable to their immature abilities of attention shifting. To investigate the relationship between the ability of attention shifting and that to consider paralinguistic information to infer speaker affect, the present research tested 45-year-old children on a DCCS task and a speaker-affect inference task. The results suggest that attention shifting is necessary, but not sufficient, for children to rely on the paralinguistic information to infer speaker affect.
