Abstract(in English) We investigated the fundamental characteristics of the electric-sound transduction device -thermophone-. A thermophone generates sound via time-varying Joule heating of an electrically conductive layer, which leads to expansion and contraction of a small pocket of air near the surface of the metallic thin film. The results show that the frequency characteristics are flat up to 190 kHz and the directivity patterns are in good agreement with theoretical predictions, assuming a rectangular diaphragm with the same size as the metal film. In addition, we successfully reached high conversion efficiency(acoustic energy / input power) approximately 150 times greater than the one we used at the same power consumption (0.6W) by changing materials and thicknesses of those layers.
