Protected Coarse Granular Routing Optical Networks

Abstract(in English) Introduction of dedicated protection to coarse granular routing optical networks is proposed. The coarse granular routing can mitigate the filter narrowing effect caused by wavelength selective switches in nodes traversed by an optical path. It has been verified that coarse granular routing optical networks without protection can substantially reduce the number of optical fibers installed in a network, which is realized by taking advantage of the combination of coarse granular routing and fine granular add/drop. However, the introduction of protection restricts the fine granular add/drop operations for each pair of working and backup paths since these paths must be accommodated into a pair of non-overlapping virtual fibers defined by the coarse granular routing. Thus we introduce a path granularity protection scheme into coarse granular routing optical networks and develop a network optimization algorithm that is aware of the constraint. Numerical experiments elucidate that the proposed architecture can achieve not only the requested resiliency but also the substantial fiber number reduction.
