| Abstract(in English) | Emmanuel L?vinas is a French philosopher known for his conceptualization of "the other person" as an infinite existence. He states that encountering "the other person" is to face one’s "visage." But the "visage" here is not seen. In this article, we first confirm that L?vinas’s visage is not a part of a body but rather is a personality. In so doing, we confirm that L?vinas’s use of "visage" resembles that of panim（פנים） in Hebrew, which means “face”, as used in the Old Testament and clarify its influence on his use. Second, I will try to show duality of L?vinas’s idea of justice, which he states as having "two faces". Justice, in him, is the ethical approach to one’s visage. But, this is metaphysical justice. In real life, justice limits the ethical responsibility demanded by the visage. I will contrast the two conflicting ideas of justice. |
