Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | Algae can be disrupted by ultrasonication; however, the mechanism of disruption is still unclear. Previously, the frequency dependence of disruption has been investigated using suspensions of the algae Chaetoceros gracilis, C. calcitrans, and Nannochloropsis sp. at 20 kHz, 400 kHz, 1.0 MHz, 2.2 MHz, 3.3 MHz, and 4.3 MHz, and the frequency depended on the species of algae. Because the disruption depends on the physical properties of the algae, we focused on the mechanical resonance of the algae. In this study, we performed the same disruption experiment on microcapsules, which have a simpler structure than algae and have physical properties, such as elastic modulus and size, that can be altered. The resonance frequency of the microcapsules was simultaneously estimated and compared with the results. The microcapsule disruption was frequency dependent and followed the same trend as the estimated resonance frequency. Therefore, the ultrasonic disruption of microcapsules and algae is caused by their mechanical resonance. |
