Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study examined the acquisition of mental state language by 3 year-old Japanese children. The parents of 530 children responded to a child mental state word checklist and questionnaires about socio-cognitive development. Individual differences for child mental state language were examined with reference to the children’s socio-cognitive development, parental education and employment, number of siblings, and early social interaction experiences. The results indicated that the development of mental state language could be explained by the early stages of the non-linguistic aspects of socio-cognitive development. The individual differences in language-mediated socio-cognitive development in turn were explained by the development of mental state language, the early social interaction experiences and parental employment. The implications of these results are discussed
