A Study on Chinese Learners' Use of "-au" Compound Verbs Seen in Four Kinds of Learner Corpora

Abstract(in English) The number of Japanese compound verbs is said to be larger than that of simple verbs. Its usage is also known to be highly complicated. Japanese compound verbs, however, have not been taught appropriately in Japanese education for Chinese Learners. This may be due to limited understanding of the actual usage of compound verbs. Focusing on Japanese “-au”compound verbs, Zhang (2014) examined their usage based on quantitative and qualitative analysis of a large-scale Japanese native speaker corpus, but how Chinese learners use “-au”compound verbs in L2 Japanese has remained unclear. In the current study, therefore, we investigated the usage of“-au” compound verbs by Chinese learners based on four kinds of learner corpora. The analyses have shown that Chinese learners use Japanese “-au” compound verbs largely in the similar way to Japanese native speakers, but their usage is highly limited in variety both of collocations and semantic types. Our findings will shed a new light on the future instruction of Japanese compound verbs for Chinese learners.
