Production of English Question Sentences by Japanese EFL Learners

Abstract(in English) Acquisition of communicative competence has been the central objective of English language education in Japan since the 1990s. Asking the right questions at the right time in accordance with what has just been uttered by other parties in the conversation is an integral part of effective oral interactions but Japanese learners of English experience socio-cultural, linguistic and cognitive difficulties in doing so. In Japanese, question sentences are formed simply by adding the question marker “ka” at the end of a sentence without changing the word order. Thus, constructing English question sentences on the fly poses non-negligible processing difficulties for Japanese learners of English. Following up on our earlier report in 原田・森下(2014), we will report on the data obtained by a more recent data collection efforts. In the initial data collection sessions conducted in 2013, students were asked to convert statement sentences into question sentences beginning with wh-phrases without any training of the target sentence structures. In the follow-up data collection sessions conducted in 2014, students were first asked to reproduce statement and question sentences in one session, and then they were asked to convert the statement sentences already used in earlier reproduction tasks into corresponding question sentences in a different session conducted one week or several weeks later,. Comparison of the “right answer rates” of the two series of data collection sessions suggests that preceding reproduction tasks lead to improved right-answer rates, but this may simply be because of reduced cognitive load for typing. We need to verify if exposure to one question sentence leads to an improved right answer rate of reproduction of or conversion into a question sentence with the same or similar syntactic structure but with substantially different lexical items.
