Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It has been often pointed out that using phrasal verbs in an appropriate way is not necessarily easy for some of English learners. Focusing mainly on learners' written data, previous studies have shown that learners generally tend to underuse phrasal verbs. However, fewer studies have compared learners' speeches and essays. In the current study, therefore, we used a learner corpus including both speeches and essays by Japanese learners of English to analyze how they use phrasal verbs in two production modes. Analytical foci were on (i) the overall amount of phrasal verbs that learners used, (ii) the types of phrasal verbs that learners used and did not use, (iii) the type of phrasal verbs that learners overused and underused in comparison to English native speakers. Our analyses revealed that Japanese learners underused phrasal verbs not only in written essays but also in speeches in comparison to English native speakers.
