Fabrication and evaluation of ErxYbyY2-x-ySiO5 crystal for the development of waveguides optical amplifier

Abstract(in English) Since absorption cross-section of Yb3+ is about one order larger than that of Er3+ at 980nm excitation band, increase of the 1530nm luminescence intensity has been observed frequently from optical materials co-doped with Er and Yb under excitation at this band. We have investigated ErxY2-xSiO5 crystals as a gain medium for silicon photonics. Further effective sensitization by Yb co-doping is expected in such a crystalline system with short Er3+-Er3+ distance. In this work, ErxYbyY2-x-ySiO5 crystals with different ratio of Yb/Er were fabricated by pulsed-laser deposition (PLD). Maximum enhancement of PL intensity and excitation efficiency were 5.3 times and 9.7 times at Yb/Er=1 under 975nm excitation. This experiment contributed to the development of effective amplifier material in silicon photonics.
