Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We have been doing R&D and filed experiment of a mesh-topological wireless network “NerveNet” towards realizing a resilient regional network. NerveNet is composed of multiple interconnected basestations that accommodate devices. Each basestation has functions of database as well as packet routing, enabling NerveNet to provide communication and information services as much as possible even it has some failures or it is disconnected from the Internet in emergency situations. Based on the outcome of large-scale tests of NerveNet on a testbed deployed in two campuses of Tohoku University in 2013, NICT started a field trial of NerveNet as a regional resilient intra network in Onagawa town of Miyagi prefecture in 2014. It has been providing a camera surveillance of Onagawa port and intra phone between Onagawa town office and one shelter with the use NerveNet only. Since May of 2015 NICT has conducting another trial in Shirahama town of Wakayama prefecture. Nine basestations were installed in the town and its suburb. Five of them, with nine Wi-Fi access points, have been providing Wi-Fi access to users. The network has been providing unique services such as Shelter Map and Intra Phone available without the access to the Internet. More than 3600 residents and tourists have used the network. Not only these trials of NerveNet as a stationary network but also others as an ad-hoc network have been done. Latest field trials are presented and a future direction from regional information platform to regional operation system (ROS) is mentioned.
