Abstract(in Japanese) | (See Japanese page) |
Abstract(in English) | A curvilinearly tapered waveguide is introduced to improve the characteristics of a polarization splitter and converter, whose characteristics are investigated by the beam-propagation method. First, a polarization splitter and a converter are separately investigated. To achieve a splitter with a short device length, a conventional linearly tapered core is transformed into a curvilinearly tapered one. As a result, a crosstalk of less than -20 dB is achieved over a wavelength range of 1.35 $mu$m to 1.7 $mu$m. Next, we introduce a similar taper profile into a polarization converter. The use of the curvilinearly tapered core again allows us to achieve a polarization converter with a reduced device length. Furthermore, the wide wavelength characteristic is obtained by partially removing the upper core near the output, since the polarization recoupling is avoided. Finally, we combine the modified polarization splitter and converter. The combined structure achieves both crosstalk and extinction ratio of less than -15 dB over a wide wavelength range of 1.33 $mu$m to 1.7 $mu$m with a quarter device length, compared with a conventional structure based on the linearly tapered core. |
