Low Loss Coupling Technique between ZrO2-SiO2 PLC and SMF

Abstract(in English) Downsizing of a planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) have been investigated by raising refractive index difference (Δ) of the PLC. In a ZrO2-SiO2 PLC, 5 % or more Δ which exceeds Δofthe conventional PLC has been realized, but coupling loss to SMF is increased to 2.7dB/facet. Coupling loss is increased by large difference of mode field diameter (MFD) between the ZrO2-SiO2PLC and a single-mode fiber (SMF). To solve this problem, we designed a spot size converter (SSC)for expanding MFD at the edge of the PLC, and using high-Δ fiber for reducing MFD at the edge of fiber. As the results, we realized the coupling losses less than 0.5dB/facet.
