Estimation of attentional location in the three-dimensional space based on vergence eye movements

Abstract(in English) We compared vergence eye movements when viewing an object directly and that when paying attention to the object. We presented two objects at different distances (far and near) and directions (left and right) and asked subjects to look at one of them directly or to pay attention to one of them. We measured vergence eye movements of the subjects while doing the tasks. If vergence eye movement changes according to the distance of the object, we can use it as an index to estimate the position of attention. The results showed that the vergence angle changed to the direction corresponding to the target distance in some subjects when subjects paid attention to the target although the magnitude of vergence angle was smaller than that of the target distance. This fact indicates that it is possible to estimate the position of attention based on vergence eye movements in three dimensional space.
