High Gain Slot-Coupled Feed Microstrip Antennas by means of a Dielectric Cover

Abstract(in English) It is assumed that tablet terminals will be used as very small aperture terminals for disaster satellite communications. As they use antennas, we focus on a Slot-Coupled feed Microstrip Antenna (SCMSA) that has wideband property and study for its gain increase. The high gain is achieved by the structure arranging a dielectric cover with a high permittivity over SCMSA. Optimum parameters are determined by the analysis of the finite-difference time domain (FDTD) method with regard to the spacing height, thickness and relative permittivity for the dielectric cover. They are compared with some measured results based on an experimental antenna. When the dielectric cover is composed of 38mm in spacing height, 3.06mm in thickness, and 10.2 in relative permittivity at 4GHz of designed frequency, SCMSA obtains 13.8dBi of the actual gain and 22.3% of its return loss bandwidth as the result of the FDTD analysis.
